A week after the tragic Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, authorities have successfully matched DNA samples for 215 victims of the Air India Flight AI‑171 disaster. The remains of 198 individuals have now been returned to their families, announced Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
Among the 198 deceased whose bodies were released:
149 were Indian nationals
32 British
7 Portuguese
1 Canadian
Additionally, the mortal remains of 9 individuals who perished on the ground were also handed over.
Six injured survivors remain hospitalized, all in stable condition.
Flight AI‑171, carrying 242 passengers and crew from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, tragically crashed shortly after takeoff into the BJ Medical College hostel area, claiming 241 lives onboard and causing further casualties on the ground. So far, only one person has survived the accident.
Authorities continue DNA matching efforts to identify all victims. The identification team is working round the clock to expedite the process, while counseling support is being provided to affected families as a relief operation continues.
